5/6 - Mandi Jo Murtaught, PT, DPT, WCS will be subbing for Alison.

Sedentary lifestyle, repetitive movement, and the new standard American posture (think hunched over a computer, phone, steering wheel, etc) are impacting health and mobility. Some potential symptoms from these actions include chronic tension in the back and shoulders, pain in the hip flexors and hamstrings, and even lack of flexion in the wrists from computer or phone use. Can you relate?

This six-week series combines the mindfulness of yoga through pranayama (breath control), asana (postures), and meditation with functional movement. Functional movements like jumping, balancing, and lifting or carrying objects translate to more ease in everyday life. Combining these approaches will encourage mobility, longevity, and sustainability in your body and help foster the creation of a movement rich lifestyle.

Objectives

  • Learn how to use yoga to create a sustainable movement practice.
  • Explore the difference between exercise and movement and why the distinction is important.
  • Discover the synergy of strength, flexibility and mobility.
  • Take yoga and functional movement off the mat and into real life - especially out into nature!

Class Includes

  • Clinical discussion on anatomy, yoga and functional movement.
  • Movement practice inside Tacoma Nature Center's auditorium.
  • Movement practice outside along the trails.

What to bring

  • Mat - we have extras to borrow
  • Shoes appropriate for outdoor activity, though bare feet are welcomed and encouraged
